TEACHING STRATEGIES AND IDEAS
Maths ideas
- Hoola hoops for times tables: 12 spaces
You can practice timetables, counting in 2s, 6s, random numbers pointing to different spaces, songs for every timetable
- Ladder with 12 timetables on the wall and the students' names showing which timetable they are on:
Every morning they go over the timetables in their miniwhiteboards, if they have o mistakes, they move forward. The homework will be to review the timetable they are on at the moment.
- Maths little box of helpers:
Space in their notebooks where they put their calculations (right hand side of the notebooks)
- Daily routine to go over timetables:
Hoola hoop all together chanting, write some practice answers to the teacher's questions in the miniwhiteboards, write the 10 numbers that the teacher is asking you, ask random students.
- Teach different multiplication methods instead of just one, so the children get to pick their own one.
- Miniwhiteboards practice for mental maths everyday. The teacher correct the, all together.
- There are always different tasks for the 4/5 different levels of ability (low, average, high).
- Cross curricular activity: marketing magic (plan a whole marketing product, analyse the budget and try to sell it on an advert).
- Always describe the steps to success and explain what to do in everyone of them.
- Problem of the week, it's a big challenging problem that they all have to try and work out throughout the week.
- Our best mistake: displayed in the classroom, so nobody else does it. Learning is not being afraid to fail!
- Mighty mathematicians: picture of the student's page of the notebook where you can see how good they have performed.
- Displays: maths vocabulary, top tips, example, steps to success, problem of the week, non negotiables, maths helpers (multiplication grid), class targets ...
- Bags with problem solving activities: the students can use them and take them out to play in the classroom.
- Work on notebooks: always a photocopy showing what they have to do and what do they need to use (WALT: what are we learning for? WILF: what am I looking for?).
- Big A3 notebook where students solve their challenging problems. There are pin tire of the students working, working out the results, coming up with conclusions on posted notes...
- The learning pit display: facing a challenge? Have a go! Problem solving! Deeper learning! Successful learning! (Check picture with display).
- Wonder wall: questions form the teacher and answers for students).
- Number of the week display: spell it, round to the nearest 10, multiply by 100, divide by 1000, create a calculation with this as an answer, tell me two factors, add 1000, subtract 10000, half it.
- Maths is everywhere: bottles, money, pizza divided, tesco receipts, train ticket, remote control, watch, sudoku...
English ideas
- Report planner with keywords before writing a report by themselves.
- Brain gym: a penguin comes to tea
- Brain gym: get loose, get funky, get down to the beat, get your body moving, starting with my feet, ooooh my feet/ my hips/ my bum/ my lips/ my head/ sit down
- Brain gym: Alex the camel has got a hump (holding a partner hitting their bums).
- Brain gym: everybody do this, everybody do that, everybody do this and that (show a wrong action and make them get mixed up).

- Bingo game: write 4 words/numbers in your miniwhiteboards and circle them if the teacher calls them out. Shout lotto when they get all the numbers/words.
- Spelling game: everybody writes a word from a list on the board and they have to show it. If they wrote the same one as the teacher, they loose their turn.
Whole school ideas
TO DO:
- Every time they start a new topic: KWL chart with their ideas to stick in their notebooks and fill in.
- At the beginning of every day: write the lessons/ subjects and if it's e beginning of a new unit, they must write the targets for each lesson on a display.
- Spelling: every Monday they teach new words, they give the parents those words so they learn how to spell them at home and every Friday they have a spelling test.
- Spelling: always displaying the words and taking mental pictures of tricky words. Ambitious vocabulary is always displayed in the classroom.

They have to get tokens or house points to get certificates or prizes.
- Mobile phones policy: they are forbidden, but year 5 and 6 can bring them in because they go home by themselves. As soon as they walk in the classroom, they put them in a box. The teacher puts that box away and gives them back at the end of the day.

They give short explanations in the smart board and finally children practice in their notebooks, with a photocopy with instructions from the teacher.
